Friends in Action has opened the doors for its new Senior Center in Ellsworth. The programming takes place every weekday morning in the former Bryant E. Moore School on State Street in Ellsworth. Hours are 9:00 to 1:00, with a coffee house for seniors open every day from until 11:00 in the cafeteria.
When the City of Ellsworth moved its middle school students into a new school building, the old school building became available for new uses. The Downeast Family YMCA moved its preschool childcare programs into the space. They invited Friends in Action to partner with them to offer programs to seniors.
Having a Senior Center in Ellsworth has long been a dream for many. Friends in Action already had a weekly social coffee morning for seniors which we hoped to expand to a daily program.
The Moore School space allows many opportunities for generations to interact and have fun together.
The center is a busy place, filled with warmth and cheer. It is already becoming a true community center. It is open to seniors 55 years and older from throughout Hancock County and there is no admission charge. Seniors are asked to register at the front door when they enter the building.
The center is easy to access by the local bus, Downeast Transportation, and seniors may ride the bus free of charge when they come to the Center. Transportation can also be arranged through Friends in Action volunteers. Call 664-6016 for more information. |
