Our Services

“Before, I had to depend on my daughter or use the bus, which wasn’t always possible because of my legs and back. Faith in Action has given me my independence back!”

GUIDELINES FOR COMMUNITY NEIGHBORS AND THEIR FAMILIES

Friends in Action is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Our mission is to offer free services to elderly and disabled residents of Hancock County, so that they can live independently, with dignity and a strong quality of life.  Our program is supported by a coalition of community organizations, health care providers, volunteer groups and 10 local churches.

WHOM WE SERVE:

We offer services to older adults (generally those over 60 years old) and adults who are disabled, as well as their caregivers.

COST

There is no charge for our services. We welcome donations. We are funded with individual donations, bequests, small grants, and hold fund raising events. Without adequate funding we will not be able to continue this program.

VOLUNTEERS

Services are provided by volunteers, who give of their own time to help others. Volunteers are screened and trained. They are usually not reimbursed for mileage or time. They appreciate your thanks.  (If you are a MaineCare recipient, they can receive a mileage reimbursement from WHCA.) They are kind and caring people who want to help their neighbors. They are pledged to keep confidentiality.

Please call our office if you have any problems or do not feel comfortable with a particular volunteer or if you would prefer a different volunteer in the future. We appreciate your input.

SERVICES

We offer a variety of services, depending on availability of volunteers.  Services include: transportation, errands, friendly visits, meal delivery, and telephone reassurance. We can also help you find other resources.  We sometimes put together teams of volunteers to do chores, yard work, or simple home repairs. (This may take some time to arrange.)

RELEASE FORMS

We ask that you sign a simple agreement form to receive volunteer services and that you provide an emergency contact and contingency plan should it be needed while you are with a volunteer.

Can You Help?

Rides are needed for medical appointments, ongoing treatments such as dialysis or radiation, and to go to the dentist, eye doctor, grocery store, post office and to do other errands. Rides are also needed for social outings, volunteering, to get to the food pantry, to go to the library or to take a pet to the vet. Click here for more ...

Can You Donate?

Friends in Action needs your financial support to continue its work. We do not receive any federal or state funding at this time and rely entirely on community fundraising, small grants and individual donations.
