Being a volunteer driver:

All of our volunteers determine their own availability, including towns, days and times. Some volunteer drivers share their vehcile on their way to or from work; others volunteer when they are in Hancock County during the summer season, and many volunteer when they can.

Rides are needed for medical appointments, ongoing treatments such as dialysis or radiation, and to go to the dentist, eye doctor, grocery store, post office and to do other errands. Rides are also needed for social outings, volunteering, to get to the food pantry, to go to the library or to take a pet to the vet. Volunteers sometimes are required to escort the person in to the appointment; please let us know if you cannot do this. We currently have particular need of volunteers in the Blue Hill area and in the Sullivan area; however, as the demand for our services grows, we are grateful for help everywhere!

Being a friendly visitor:

Stop and a visit a lonely neighbor once or twice a week. These visits can be brief (30 minutes to one hour) and should be made on a regular basis. Simple reporting is required by the volunteer and the volunteer must have completed the Visitor Training or an equivalent.

Senior Center volunteers:

We need volunteers greet visitors, to teach a class, or serve in the coffee house. We also need help with special programs such as the Senior Food Bank once a month, especially when the truck delivers the food.

Running errands or pick up prescriptions:

These volunteers pick up needed items for the home bound.

Grocery shopping: This may entail transporting the person to the store and helping them get their groceries if they are physically unable to do so alone. Others only require the ride to and from and some help carrying groceries.

Being a Telephone Friend:

Volunteers call the homebound on a regular basis to check on well-being or to chat. They may be asked to call every day at a certain time or to call occasionally. Simple reporting is required.

Being a Handyman:

We sometimes have requests for help with simple home repairs such as fixing cupboards or a step, replacing worn carpet, winterizations such a insulating windows, or changing light bulbs. We have also helped with ramp installations.
